MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS IN THE UK ARE CALLING FOR OBESITY TO BE RECLASSIFIED AS A DISEASE, WHICH HAS PROMPTED MASSIVE DEBATES REVERBERATING THROUGH THE HEALTH & FITNESS COMMUNITY.
The answers are not so simple. The fact remains that obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the UK and the secondary diseases which present as an implication of obesity are straining the already delicate balance of NHS resources.
There are so many variable at play which are a debate within themselves. Is it lack of education? The fact that having access to free medical treatment makes people ambivalent about taking care of their health? Or is it just downright dishonest politics at play?
Whatever decisions are made at government level, I do not believe that the obesity crisis will be eradicated, until accountability comes into play. From the governing bodies, medical profession, food industry, fitness & health profession and the public themselves, I can't see that this crisis can simply be averted by labelling obesity differently.
